Dosing Capsules for Dry Herb Vaporizers: Who Uses Them and Why

In short: a dosing capsule is a small cup you fill with ground dry herb in advance and drop into your vaporizer's chamber. Capsules are most useful if you vape away from home, want roughly the same amount each session, like smaller loads in a big chamber, or are tired of scraping out the chamber. If you only vape at home and always pack a full chamber, you may not need them. Capsules are model-specific, so buy the ones made for your device.

This is a cross-brand guide: what capsules do, who actually benefits, glass versus metal, and which capsule fits which device. If you own a Storz & Bickel device and want more detail on materials, our glass vs aluminium capsules article goes further.

What a Dosing Capsule Is

A dosing capsule is a small cup that sits in, or on top of, your vaporizer's heating chamber. Some have a lid and some don't. You load ground dry herb into the capsule instead of straight into the chamber. When you have finished, you lift or tip the capsule out, and the chamber stays largely clean.

Storz & Bickel made the idea mainstream. Its support site says the Veazy's filling chamber is the same size as the chambers in the Venty, Mighty+ and Crafty+, so one capsule size works across all four. Retailers commonly quote about 0.15 g for an S&B capsule. The Storz & Bickel documents we checked don't give a fill weight, and the real amount depends on your grind and how firmly you fill it.

How Storz & Bickel Intends Capsules to Be Used

The Mighty+ manual is worth reading here, because it surprises a lot of owners:

  • S&B calls its own dosing capsules "for single use" and says to throw them away in household waste after use.
  • You fill them through the Magazine Cap, store filled capsules in the Magazine, or fill 40 at once with S&B's Filling Set.
  • To use one, unscrew the cooling unit, drop the filled capsule into the filling chamber with the cap facing upwards, and screw the cooling unit back on.

Our glass and aluminium capsules are a different idea. They're made to be reused: empty them, soak them, rinse them and fill them again. The principle is the same, but over time you buy fewer of them.

Who Uses Dosing Capsules, and Why

1. People who vape away from home

Fill three or four lidded capsules before you leave, and you won't need to carry a grinder or handle loose herb in a car park or at a campsite. Let a spent capsule cool before you tip it out or put it back in its case, then drop in a fresh one. Screw-lid capsules also stop the contents spilling in a pocket or bag.

2. People who want the same amount every time

A capsule's volume is fixed, so a level fill comes out roughly the same each session. That makes it easier to judge how long a pouch of herb will last.

3. People with a big chamber who want smaller sessions

If you load a large chamber loosely with a small amount, the herb can shift about and heat unevenly. A capsule that fits your device reduces the space the load has to move about in. Glass chamber reducers for the S&B portables exist for the same reason.

4. People who hate cleaning the chamber

A load that sits in a capsule leaves less residue on the chamber walls, so the chamber needs brushing less often, though the chamber, screens and cooling path still need regular cleaning. You still clean the capsules, but a handful of small cups in a jar of isopropyl alcohol is easier than scrubbing inside a device.

5. People who share or switch between blends

If two people use one device, or you like to try different dry herbs in one evening, separate capsules keep each load apart and make swapping quick.

Who Can Skip Them

  • Full-chamber home users. If you always pack a full chamber at home, a capsule mostly takes up space that could hold herb.
  • People chasing the biggest possible session. A capsule sits inside the chamber, so it holds less than the chamber would on its own.
  • People who dislike any change in draw. Some owners find the draw feels slightly different through a capsule. Try a small pack before you buy a big one.

Glass, Open-Top or Screw-Lid?

Type Best for Watch out for
Open-top glass Quick reloads at home, easy cleaning, no metal in the cup No lid, so not for carrying pre-loaded; glass can chip if dropped
Screw-lid aluminium Pre-loading for travel, because the lid keeps everything in Small lids to keep track of; fill without packing too tightly
Arizer in-chamber or in-stem metal Smaller loads in Solo and Air stems Two different designs exist, so match the capsule to your stem

If you want both, a common split is open-top glass for loading at home and screw-lid capsules for carrying.

Which Capsule Fits Which Device

Capsules aren't universal. Chambers differ, so buy the one listed for your device.

Device Our capsules Notes from the listing
Venty, Veazy, Mighty, Mighty+, Crafty, Crafty+ Open-top glass, 3-pack (or 5-pack); screw-lid aluminium 14 mm across. The glass ones are listed for the S&B portables only.
TinyMight 2 and 1 Drop'n'Tip glass; Armour screw-lid 14 mm across; they sit in the chamber with the stem on top
Arizer Solo, Solo 2, Solo 2 MAX, Solo 3 In-chamber XL Sits in the chamber, with the stem on top
Arizer Solo 3 and Air MAX with compatible XL stems Small in-stem Goes inside compatible XL glass stems only
LimeLight Frolic Glass; screw-lid aluminium Made for the Frolic chamber
POTV Lobo and ONE Scoop'n'Go glass Put the side with the small holes facing down

Our screw-lid aluminium S&B capsules are also listed for the Volcano and Plenty. On those desktops, capsules go in through a capsule adapter rather than dropping straight into a chamber, so check with us before ordering for a desktop setup. For Arizer owners, XL stems and microdosing explains which capsule suits which stem, and our TinyMight capsule tips cover technique on that device.

To carry pre-filled capsules, our 4-piece grinder holds five Armour or five standard S&B-size capsules in its screen chamber, so you can grind and carry with one piece of kit.

Getting a Good Session From a Capsule

  • Grind medium-fine. Big lumps heat unevenly in a small cup, and powder can block the holes.
  • Fill level and don't pack hard. Fill to just under the rim and settle it lightly. S&B's manual warns that over-compressed material makes inhaling harder, and that applies just as much inside a capsule.
  • Test, then adjust. A capsule puts an extra layer between the heater and the herb. If your first session feels thin, try your next one a step warmer or give it a little longer before the first draw, and keep whatever works.
  • Clean them in batches. Follow the care notes on your capsule's listing. Glass and aluminium capsules are commonly soaked in isopropyl alcohol, rinsed in warm water and dried fully. Replace any capsule that's chipped, cracked or dented.
  • If the draw is tight or the vapour thin: check the capsule is listed for your device, clear any blocked holes and screens, and fill more loosely. Then adjust your settings.

FAQ

Are Storz & Bickel's own capsules reusable?

The Mighty+ manual describes them as single-use and says to dispose of them after use. Our glass and aluminium capsules are made to be cleaned and reused.

Do dosing capsules waste herb?

Not usually, but it depends on the device, the capsule, how you fill it and your settings. Use a capsule listed for your device and don't overpack it.

Can I use one brand's capsules in another device?

Only use a capsule that's listed as compatible with your device. The current S&B portables share one chamber size, but matching diameter alone doesn't guarantee fit or airflow on other brands.

Are glass capsules better than metal?

Neither is simply better. Glass is easy to see into and clean, while screw-lid metal is better for carrying pre-filled loads.

Do I still need a screen?

Yes. Keep your device's normal screens fitted unless the maker says otherwise.
