Arizer Solo 3 vs Firefly 2+ Review: Session Convection vs Breath-Activated On-Demand Heat

Short answer: the Arizer Solo 3 is a session device: it heats in seconds, then lets you take relaxed pulls for as long as you like on a charge that Arizer rates at up to three hours. The Firefly 2+ is a breath-activated, on-demand convection portable that heats only while you draw. Choose the Solo 3 for easy, repeatable, glass-path sessions; choose a Firefly-style device only if the “one pull at a time” ritual is what you are after, and check availability first (see below).

We sell the Arizer Solo 3 V2.0 and its accessories, but we do not sell the Firefly 2+, so this comparison sticks to what each manufacturer says and what is widely reported.

Two different ways to heat

Arizer Solo 3 V2.0: heat first, then sip

Arizer describes the Solo III as an instant-heating ceramic convection design with a hybrid ratio of 80% convection and 20% conduction, ready in 5–15 seconds. It has two modes: Session Mode for steady, flavorful pulls and On Demand Mode, where you heat to a preset when you want a quick hit. You can set the temperature in one-degree or ten-degree steps and save three presets.

Firefly 2+: heat only when you inhale

Firefly calls its approach “dynamic convection”. The 2+ is ready in about three seconds, and the air temperature climbs as you draw, up to the maximum you set (Firefly quotes a range of 200–500 °F). Between draws it cools quickly, so material is not being heated while you pause. Steady, longer pulls of ten seconds or more are how reviewers say it performs best.

Vapor feel and airflow

The Solo 3 sends air through a glass path, and you can swap in short, long, XL or bead-cooled stems to tune temperature and draw. Warm-and-steady is the general character, and there is very little technique to learn. The Firefly 2+ uses a borosilicate glass heating chamber and vapor path too, but its ramping heat rewards a slow, deliberate draw. Firefly says the 2+ added 33% more airflow over the original Firefly 2; even so, first-time users often need a few sessions to find the right pull length.

Battery and charging

  • Solo 3: Arizer rates up to 3 hours in Session Mode or 100+ On Demand draws per charge, with USB-C PD charging and use-while-charging. The battery is not user-replaceable; Arizer handles replacements.
  • Firefly 2+: a removable, rechargeable battery that charges on a dock. Firefly's support page suggests a 9-volt or higher adapter for the fastest charge, and up to two hours with a weaker one. Reviewers report roughly half a dozen sessions before a recharge, and the device cannot be used while it sits on the dock, so a spare battery is the usual advice.

For long days, the Solo 3's runtime and passthrough charging are the clear advantage.

Size, upkeep and everyday use

The Solo 3 weighs 280 g according to Arizer and takes a glass stem, so it is a handheld rather than a pocket vape. Cleaning is straightforward: rinse or soak the glass stem, and give the oven a quick brush. The Firefly 2+ is slimmer and lighter, but its chamber, glass window and mouthpiece need regular wiping to keep flavor crisp, and there is more to take apart.

App and support: worth checking before you buy

Firefly's own site currently notes that the Android app is no longer available and that iOS users are directed to a desktop-browser web app. It also says a third-generation release is “coming” without a date. One long-running review site says Firefly appears to have wound down and that warranty and support may not last. We cannot verify the company's current trading position, so anyone considering a Firefly 2+ should confirm stock, warranty and support with the retailer first. The Solo 3, by contrast, carries Arizer's lifetime heater warranty, 2-year limited warranty and 1-year battery warranty (glass is not covered).

Which one suits you?

Solo 3 if…

  • you prefer to press a button, wait a few seconds and settle in;
  • you value runtime, warranty clarity and a large range of replaceable glass;
  • you sometimes use a water pipe (the frosted tube is in the box, and the screen inverts automatically).

A Firefly-style device if…

  • you like a one-pull-at-a-time rhythm and are comfortable with a slimmer device and extra cleaning;
  • you have confirmed that stock and support are available.

Make the Solo 3 yours

Flavor and comfort on the Solo 3 depend heavily on the stem. Start with a glass pearl cooling stem or 110 mm Aura stem if you find vapor warm, add a backspacer kit to keep herb off the heater, and stock domed screens. Our cooling stems collection and full Solo 3 collection have the rest, and the ultimate guide to Solo 3 stems explains lengths and shapes.

Recall note: the June 2026 Solo III battery recall covers only the Intergalactic (Black) colourway with listed serial prefixes. See our summary of what it does and does not include.
